OUTLINE OF THE NEXT GAME (temporary name: Lord of the Land)
Goal of the Game:
This is a turn-based strategy game focusing on inter-player combat and domestic control. A player is in charge of a single kingdom. The player must balance fighting other kingdoms for dominance and taking time to develop his own kingdom.
Domestic aspect:
The game has two views: Play View and Zone View. The player may switch between them at any time on his turn. The Zone View is used for designating certain areas of the map for various purposes. The Play View is used for cultivating zones or building structures on them.
To zone an area of the map:
First switch to Zone View. Then designate the zone type (examples following). Then designate which squares of the map to zone.
To cultivate or build on a zone:
First create the appropriate worker (examples following) in Play View. Then send that worker to the zone to be developed. Then set the worker to the task.
Zones are necessary for different reasons (examples following).
Zone types with corresponding worker types and reasons for zoning:
Castle, Builder, Allows creation of new worker units
Barracks, Builder, Allows creation of new fighting units
Road, Builder, Allows transportation
Wall, Builder, Protects against invasion
Magic area, Magician, Magic points are used to research new types of walls and fighting units
Mining, Gnome, Allows faster production of units
Farming, Faun, Prevents starvation
Fishing, Naiad, Prevents starvation
Woodland, Dryad, Allows faster production of units
Builders may continue on to a new project after completing a task. All other workers must remain on their zone in order for the kingdom to benefit from that zone each turn. One of these workers can cultivate up to 20 squares per turn. If a zone is larger than 20 squares, multiple workers are required.
Problems that can occur domestically:
Castle revolts. Reason: not protected by walls or fighters.
Rival within the kingdom vies for your power. Reason: not enough food.
Disease. Reason: overcrowding (not enough castles).
Rewards for doing well domestically:
Bonus units.
New types of castles or barracks to build more efficient units.
Cultural kudos.
Fighting aspect:
Types of fighters:
Fighting happens over land, sea, and sky. There are different fighting units for each of these three types. There are also different categories of fighting units based on how powerful the units are. (Category 1 is most powerful; category 4 is least powerful.)
Possible creatures to use for fighting units:
Land (creature and category):
Basic Fighter, 4
Centaur, 3
Unicorn, 3
Giant, 2
Sphinx, 2
Behemoth, 1
Sea (creature and category):
Merfolk, 3
Sea Monster, 2
Leviathan, 1
Sky (creature and category):
Roc, 3
Pegasus, 3
Hippogriff, 2
Phoenix, 2
Dragon, 1
Each of the fighting units has a different set of abilities. These can include higher speed, higher attack, higher defense, dive bombing (in the case of sky creatures), etc.
A player learns how to make new creatures by expending magic points gained from zoning magic areas.
A fighting unit captures enemy land by standing on it unopposed. Fighting units can capture any type of zone other than walls and roads. Since it is difficult to maintain fighting units on every zone in the kingdom, it is wise for players to build walls around their kingdoms.
Walls:
There are several types of walls, each with different strengths. An opposed fighting unit requires a certain number of turns before he can breech the wall. The number of turns is based on the strength of the wall and the strength of the fighting unit. Players can also create towers along the walls for use in attacking enemy fighters.
A player can learn to create magic walls to keep out flying creatures.
